Chick & Ruth’s Delly

Foreword: With the successful pre-launch of our doughnut review blog the pressure was on to make our first post. My borderline obsessive doughnut shop research left my head swimming in ideas for how to break-the-ice and where to begin this great journey. After much deliberation I was humbled when Austyn reminded me that “no one cares”. With that, we decided to start very local and very close to home.

Review #1: Chick and Ruth’s Delly.

First things first, Chick and Ruth’s is not a doughnut shop, it’s a causal diner / deli restaurant best known for their homemade pies and “colossal challenges”. They have even been featured on The Food Network TV show, Man vs. Food. They do however, have doughnuts. So when I asked Eden if we should review this local gem she challenged my integrity as a reviewer with a simple: “Why wouldn’t we Dad?”.

The Shop: Its location in the middle of Main St. and it’s narrow original layout both add to its charm. As soon as you walk in you can feel the warm community and historic roots that make up Annapolis. The bright yellow walls are strewn with pictures and the bright orange booths are filled with hot plates and happy faces. There is a small diner bar area in the front and additional seating space in the back along with a rear entrance facing Gorman Street. The casual atmosphere makes it a great spot for the family.

The Doughnuts: It wasn’t until Eden and I arrived that Saturday morning that we found out that doughnuts are one of the few things that aren’t made on-sight. For that reason, I’ll keep the review short and save it for when we review that doughnut shop directly. With less than 50 doughnuts on hand, the selection and quantity were limited. I know of people eating more than that in a sitting, and to be honest, I could probably come close.

That being said, all the classics you might look for on a Saturday morning could be found. We indulged in the following: Old Fashioned Sour Cream, Blueberry Cake, Glazed, Chocolate Frosted, Frosted with Sprinkles. They were all good. Good enough that we will certainly find out where they were made to do a separate review and link it HERE. Until then, know that the cake doughnuts were the best; specifically the Sour Cream was my #1 favorite.

Eden’s Notes: Eden went for the Chocolate Frosted over the sprinkles which was a surprise for everyone- “Chocolate was really yummier”-. If you want to learn how to eat a doughnut without using you front teeth, check this photo out.

The Take-away: If you are looking for made-in-house artisan doughnuts, Chick and Ruth’s is a Deli, dummy. But… if you find yourself in downtown Annapolis looking for a great cake doughnut and friendly staff, Chick and Ruth’s has both.
